Allulose, or D-Allulose, is a sweetener that occurs naturally. Allulose is found in various fruits and crops such as figs, wheat, molasses, jackfruit, raisins, maple, etc. Approved by the FDA in 2012, allulose was first discovered in 1940. However, due to the unavailability of procedures to separate fructose from the fruit at that time, allulose was not extracted. The first instance of lab-produced allulose was in 1994 when it was extracted in Japan. Allulose has numerous health benefits over sugar as allulose is not absorbed by the body. It passes through the body unchanged and thus can also be called sugar just for the tongue.
Allulose is 70% as sweet as sugar and avoids all of sugar’s recognized downsides. While consumption of sugar can lead to chronic cases of diabetes, cavities, arthritis, etc., allulose is successful in avoiding all these ailments and is thus considered a healthy sweetener.

Allulose Market Dynamics:
Market Drivers:
“High degree of health and nutritional consciousness”
In today’s world, cases of diabetes are very common. Diabetes has now become a genetic disease as well. Allulose has been known to not affect insulin and thus is considered safe to be consumed by diabetic patients. This is because while allulose is 70% as sweet as sugar, its calorie count is just 10% that of regular sugar. Moreover, this naturally occurring sweetener is not absorbed by the body and passes unchanged through the entire digestive tract. Thus it does not act on the daily calorie count of the body as well. With people becoming more and more conscious nutritionally, allulose may be the perfect substitute that they turn to for sugar. Therefore, allulose has the potential of taking over the entire sugar market.
“Various health benefits”
Apart from the aforementioned benefit of allulose not affecting body insulin, it also has various other health benefits. Allulose can provide satisfaction to the sweet tooth while keeping blood sugar low. Other benefits of consuming allulose over sugar include avoiding chronic diseases such as arthritis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), reducing inflammation, and getting rid of the age-old problem of cavities in teeth. Thus, these numerous health benefits can drive the demand for allulose.
“Getting approval from public healthcare agencies around the world.”
Allulose, while already being approved by the national public healthcare agencies of the United States, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and Singapore, is getting accepted in all major countries around the world. In the European Union, allulose is considered a food that is not available in sufficient quantities for testing. Once approved here, it will open the gates for the allulose market to all the countries of the EU. Thus, the legal demand for allulose is set to be driven by this factor.
Market Restraints:
“Excessive consumption may lead to serious physical ailments”
Allulose has been considered a safe sugar substitute. However, just like any other sweetener on the market, excessive consumption of allulose may also lead to issues in the body. Higher and more regular consumption of allulose has been known to increase the weight of kidneys and liver in people. This can have long-term effects on the body which may not be understood now. Moreover, it can also lead to gassiness, queasiness, and bloating.
“A significant gap in the cost”
Due to factors such as lower content in the sources, longer processing time because of inefficient processes, and increasing demand, the cost of allulose is considerably more than regular sugar. According to various studies, allulose currently costs 5 times as much as sugar. Due to the limited purchasing power of people, they may continue to purchase the cheaper alternative over the highly expensive substitute even after the proven health benefits.
Market Opportunities:
“Spreading awareness of the nutritional benefits of Allulose”
The influence of social media and its influencers is helping spread awareness about the nutritional benefits of allulose. While sitting in countries where allulose is approved, these influencers have a reach spreading across the entire world. This helps in creating awareness and due to the subsequent public demand, the approval of allulose in other countries becomes much more likely. This provides a great opportunity with the expanding power of social media.

Allulose Market Regional Stance:
The US and Mexico, in North America, are driving the growth for allulose in the region. Lifestyle changes in the US, as well as Mexico with people increasingly becoming aware of the ill effects of sugar, are a major factor driving this change. Due to this, North America has been the leader in the market for allulose. Moreover, the US FDA has also approved the use of allulose as a general-purpose sweetener. The market is thus projected to grow with a strong CAGR.
Asia Pacific, on the other hand, is increasingly accepting this naturally occurring sweetener. Japan, where allulose was first derived from fructose, is one of the largest markets with Singapore and South Korea following in its footsteps.
Europe, however, still considers allulose a ‘novel food’. This means that there is still time for this sweetener to be accepted for general and retail sales in the European Union. However, when approved, Europe might well provide a boost in the allulose market and may even go on to become the world leader in this market.
