Tuberculin Introduction

Tuberculin is a combination of proteins used in the diagnosis of tuberculosis. Tuberculin is used to perform a tuberculin skin test and is recommended only for high-risk tuberculosis patients. Tuberculin was discovered in 1980 and originally it was developed as a remedy for tuberculosis but was found to be ineffective.

Tuberculin test is referred to as a Mantoux test. Patients with active tuberculosis are indicated as tuberculin positive and upon intradermals injection of tuberculin develop hypersensitivity reaction at the site of injection. Tuberculin is obtained from a human strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis grown on a protein-free synthetic medium and buffered with potassium and sodium phosphates.
