Organ Prevention Solutions are intracellular or extracellular fluid type solutions which are perfused in the donor organs for their storage and transportation. These solutions are water like solutions which have different levels of potassium and sodium as required by different organs. These solutions are required in all organ preservation techniques including Static Cold Storage (SCS) and Machine Perfusion. Organ prevention solutions mitigate the risk of ischemic/hypoxic damage during storage or transportation. With the help of these solutions, the quality of organs is preserved and does not degrade when in-transit.
The first organ prevention solution to be ever used was the Collins Solution. This solution was first used in 1969 and was successful in the storage of heart, liver, lung, and kidney grafts. In 1980, this solution was upgraded and came to be known as Euro-Collins Solution. However, the “gold-standard” solution, which is in use even today, was developed in 1986 and is called the University of Wisconsin (UW) solution. Other solutions in use today are HTK solution, Custodial-HTK solution, and Celsior solution.

Organ Preservation Solution Market Dynamics:
Market Drivers:
“Increasing geriatric population”
According to the United Nations World Population Aging report, in 2020, there were 728 million people in the world who were over 65 years of age. The UN has estimated that this number will quickly double and rise to 1.5 billion by 2050. With the age of the population increasing, the cases of multiple organ failure will become more common. Thus, the people requiring immediate organ transplants will rise. So, this will lead to an increased demand for organ preservation solutions.
“Rise in the cases of organ failure post covid”
The coronavirus has not only changed the way people lead their lives, but it has also caused huge changes in the human body. Post the pandemic, cases of complications in several organs such as the heart, lungs, kidney, liver, etc., have become frequent. These complications are not restricted just to the older population, but such cases have also been noticed in young adults and teenagers as well. This will certainly drive the demand for organ preservation solutions as organ transplants will become the need of the hour.
“Growing investment in healthcare”
Since after the pandemic, governments and private institutions have jumped up their investments in the healthcare infrastructure. Since organ transplant requires a lot of resources, this field of medicine can benefit from the rise in the investments. For example, India’s healthcare budget for the year 2021-22 was a massive 19.7% of the Gross Development Product (GDP). Thus, with increasing investments, better organ preservation solutions are projected to enter the market which will lead to an increased demand.
Market Restraints:
“High cost of organ transplant”
Although the number of cases of multiple organ failure are rising, the cost of organ transplant is not going down. Since the supply of donor organs is restricted by the number of people who wish to give away their organs and the health of these donor organs, the supply pool is quite limited. Additionally, the cost of transportation is very high as well. Moreover, the rate of success of organ transplantations is not the best. Due to these factors, organ transplantations are still a long way from becoming a day-to-day phenomenon and this will act as a restraint in the organ preservation solution market.
“Significant gap between the organs required and organs donated”
While there is new development in the techniques for organ storage, the need for longer period of storage is rare. This is because when an organ is donated, there are always people who are in a que to get that organ. This happens because of a short and irregular supply of organs and a huge demand on the other end. Thus, the requirement of more advanced solutions is not mature as of now.
Market Opportunities:
“Investment in research and development”
Since 1969, when the first solution was used to transport an organ, there has been significant rise in the investment for research on organ preservation solutions. Moreover, philosophers are speculating from the 19th century that if a 100% efficiency is obtained in this process, the age of humans can be increased multifold. Increasing investments, therefore, leads to in-depth research and development which opens doors for groundbreaking inventions. Thus, this acts as a great opportunity to invest in this market.

Organ Preservation Solution Market Regional Stance:
North America is the leader in the market for organ preservation solutions. This is because of the fact that there is a growing demand for organs in this region due to rise in the number of chronic, end-stage diseases. Moreover, due to a mature, educated population, people willingly donate their organs after death. Concentration of key players is another factor that helps make North America the market leader.
Asia Pacific, however, is lagging behind in this market. This is because of the presence of under-developed and developing economies where organ donation, and transplantation, both, are rare. However, there is some demand from countries like Japan which have understood the importance of such procedures. Nonetheless, this region is set to experience and expansive growth with the spread of literacy and rise in geriatric population in the near future.
