Poloxamer are a class of synthetic amphiphilic triblock copolymers with the base molecular structure polyoxyethylene–polyoxypropylene–polyoxyethylene (PEO–PPO–PEO), and is produced through polymerization of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and a multifunctional initiator. Poloxamer oloxamers are freely soluble in water and in alcohol, and some types include P188 (F-68 grade), P237 (F-87 grade), P338 (F-108 grade), and P407 (F-127 grade), with poloxamer 188 (P188) being approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  These find extensive applications in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food industries for emulsifying, solubilizing, stabilizing, and as antifoaming agents, wetting agents, dispersants, thickeners, and emulsifiers. It is  also used to prevent aggregation and microbial contamination, as well as in food packaging applications. In addition, poloxamers are used in bioengineering, as drug delivery excipients, in gene therapy, injectable scaffolds for loading cells in tissue engineering, and for circumventing the Blood Brain Barrier (BBM) to improve drug delivery to the brain. Poloxamer is also a component in cell culture medium that is widely used in industrial protein production.

The thermoresponsive behavior of the material - transitions from liquid at low temperature and gel at high temperature and process is reversible - allows its use in controlled drug release systems and in tissue engineering applications, among others. Advancements in nonionic poloxamer research enable modifications to tailor properties of poloxamers for specific applications, and some advantages include biocompatibility, low toxicity, and non-ionic nature, making this material suitable for a variety of medical applications. Improving the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs and enhancing the stability of formulations are other beneficial properties of poloxamer in various end-uses. Increasing demand for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and personal care products, and packaged food products is a key factor expected to continue to drive revenue growth of the market.
